THE STATE OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS PROFESSION IN KENYA
A BENCHMARK SURVEY
This is a ground breaking study on the status of Public Relations that we have sought to carry out for a long time. Having been proposed as early as 2005, the Society has had challenges raising the requisite resources to carry out this very important study. It is instructive that the survey results come out during the 40th Anniversary of the Society.
The place of Public Relations in Kenya is under severe scrutiny. This is the time when practitioners are striving to find their place among peers in other professions. While there have been various thoughts about the status of the profession, this study has for the first time in the history of the profession in Kenya, provided a scientific basis upon which benchmarks can be made.
The key findings from this study are as telling as they are instructive. It is clear that Public Relations in Kenya is ready to leap to global standards of professionalisation. The fact that Public Relations Consultancies are being set up beyond the African region is evidence that we must practice to world standards, by which we will be judged. Our capability is under global scrutiny.
Back home, the time for defining the practice to our consumers is ripe. The Society is now well placed to provide the much needed direction on the standards of the practice in relation to accreditation, training and continuous professional development. This will be critical in providing the much needed confidence in Public Relations as a management function.
The Society is happy to share the findings of this study with all those who are committed to taking this profession to its rightful place in Kenya. We look forward to a fruitful discourse on the findings, and to more studies that provide greater insight into the practice.
We acknowledge all those who took the time to be part of the study. And to those who partnered with us to make the study a reality, we are most grateful. We assure you that you are a significant part of the history of the growth of the industry.
